Why It’s Great: If you want to live near Charleston without breaking the bank, North Charleston gives you more bang for your buck and helps you avoid being house poor.

This is a function of the neighborhood, not the city and I can’t stress that enough. You can find great neighborhoods that are safe if you know the area. I have sold a ton of homes in North Charleston and my clients love living in the neighborhoods I’ve picked because I know the area very well.


2. Traffic Congestion

As the area has grown, traffic has become an issue, particularly on I-26 during rush hour. North Charleston’s central location is convenient, but it also means heavy traffic for commuters heading to and from work, especially during peak hours. Be prepared for delays, and consider neighborhoods that minimize commute times if possible.


3. Lack of Scenic Charm

While North Charleston has a lot to offer in terms of affordability and convenience, it doesn’t have the same historic charm or picturesque views as downtown Charleston, Mount Pleasant, or West Ashley.
